Title : The principles of project management
Authors : Meri Williams
This is one of the most practical and useful books on project management for me. It explains what to do to manage the project in the correct way from the start until its end.
Every step is explained in a very clear way and examples of documents to produce during all the project life are provided.
Useful tools are presented in a simple way : project templates for the different project phases, charts, work breakdown structure (WBS).
It presents also estimation techniques (a very important topic in my opinion) and templates to manage issue lists, project updates, change requests.
The book is available from Sitepoint (the publisher) also in PDF format (Sitepoint ships worldwide).

Title : Behind Closed Doors: Secrets of Great Management
Authors : Johanna Rothman and Esther Derby
This is an introductory book to project management. It teaches you how to manage with people and resources (time, money, appliances, etc).
It doesn’t describe any project management methodology or technique in particular, in fact it isn’t a technical manual but it is very helpful to learn the “human side” of project management.
Project management is described as the fictional story of Sam who undertakes a new project and faces with the most common issues a project manager can encounter in his job.
It is a very practical and useful for me.
The book is available from Amazon (USA)
, Amazon (UK)
, Webster (Italy) and directly from the publisher Pragmatic programmers, also in the electronic formats PDF, EPUB (for iPhone, Sony, etc) and MOBI (for Kindle
, CyBook, etc).
